Persona 4 Arena: Ultimax è un seguito diretto dell'action picchiaduro Persona 4 Arena, spin-off della celebre serie di RPG nipponici ad ambientazione moderna ed esoterica.

La struttura sembra riprendere quella del capitolo precedente con scontri uno contro uno e struttura in 2D, perfezionata dagli esperti di Arc System Works, ma la storia si presenta differente, così come parte del cast.

Ai protagonisti di Persona 3, Yukari Takeba e Junpei Iori vanno dunque ad aggiungersi vari altri personaggi più o meno noti ai cultori della serie, tra i quali un misterioso Sho Minazuki. La storia vede i gruppi Investigation Team e Shadow Walkers indagare sugli eventi occorsi in Persona 4 Arena, quando il Midnight Channel torna improvvisamente in onda proponendo un nuovo torneo di combattimenti chiamato P-1 Climax, a quanto pare ancora più folle e bizzarro del precedente, con tanto di distorsioni spazio-temporali.
